Russin & Vecchi has been involved in a variety of maritime issues, including the negotiation, registration and execution of ship mortgages, the planning and construction of port facilities, and the development of port navigation rules.


Other noteworthy projects handled by the Russin & Vecchi’s attorneys in this sphere include:

  • advising a client on the transportation and operation of a foreign-flagged dredging vessel in Russian territorial waters off the northern part of Sakhalin Island; 

  • advising on legal (customs, tax, environmental, regulatory, etc.) implications of coastal operations on Sakhalin for the purpose of avoiding cabotage between Russian ports; 

  • assisting a client in locating a vessel hidden in a foreign port and in collecting payments from the ship owner; 

  • advising one of the operators of the Sakhalin projects on reflagging a platform on the Sakhalin shelf;

  • advising on the applicability of oil spill response plan requirements for foreign-flagged vessels owned by a foreign company; 

  • advising a U.S.-based transportation company on tax and customs implications associated with delivery of drilling modules from South Korea to the Piltun Bay (Sakhalin Island) marine offloading facility for the Sakhalin-1 Project.
